What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient Japanese method for curing diseases, reducing stress and creating feelings of relaxation, peace and well-being through the hands. The Japanese word Reiki is the combination of two words, Rei means universal or spiritual consciousness and Ki has the same meaning as Prana in Sanskrit, Chi in Chinese and vital energy in Spanish, meaning life energy guided by the spiritual or universal energy.

The art of healing through hands has been used for centuries, but the credit of rediscovering Reiki belongs to a Buddhist monk named Dr. Mikao Usui who found the divine methods used by Buddha and Jesus.

This divine method of healing through the hands was called Usui Shiko Ryoho or Usui system of natural healing. When Reiki came to the Western world, it underwent some changes; mainly on hand positions, Reiki levels for the initiated and symbols. At present, Reiki is in constant evolution and has many modified versions, but the main source is Usui Shiko Ryoho.

How It Works

Prana flows in all living things through the Nadis (subtle channels) and meridians. When flow of prana is blocked by imbalance (excess of positive or negative energy) between two poles, a person might suffer serious health problems. The practitioner places his hands in different positions on or near the patient's body. In this way energy and wellbeing are transmitted to the patient, creating balance in order to live a healthy life. Reiki treatment not only helps cure diseases, but also provides self-awareness.

What performs a Reiki session?

A Reiki session can last from 45 to 60 minutes. The practitioner begins by placing the hands in different positions covering the head, shoulders, stomach and back. Each position can take from 3-5 minutes depending on the needs of each individual. In cases where there are third-degree burns, painful areas or a baby sleeping, the practitioner can place the hands two or three inches above the body, nevertheless, the results will be the same.

It is better to receive reiki lying on a couch or a bed. After a reiki session most people feel peace, wellbeing, safety and may have an emotional release or fall asleep. But others might feel nothing; it means they need more Reiki sessions because their imbalances are resistant.
